Rocks Glass (Lowball / Old Fashioned)
A rocks glass is the classic choice for short cocktails: shorter than a highball, wider, and often with a heavy base that stabilizes everything. It's the perfect glass when you want something concentrated , serious , and controlled —and with plenty of room for a large ice cube. It's also called a lowball or Old Fashioned glass .
Why choose a Rocks glass
The rocks shaker is used to enhance spirit-forward cocktails (minimal dilution, no liters of soda), and it's also very practical in professional settings because it's robust and stable. Its short length encourages a more concentrated tasting experience and often allows for muddler work directly in the glass, typically used in certain recipes.
For which cocktails
It is the natural glass for anything served on ice or in short lengths : Old Fashioned, Negroni, Boulevardier, Whiskey on the rocks, and the majority of short cocktails made or served with a large ice cube.
Ideal capacity
Generally, an Old Fashioned/lowball glass holds between 15 and 33 cl depending on the model (double Old Fashioned versions are larger). The idea isn't to create volume, but to give space to the ice and the flavor.
How to choose the right Rocks glass
For a subcategory that converts well, incorporate these criteria into your text + your filters:
Thick bottom / heavy base : stability + premium look + secure grip.
Comfortable opening : for a large ice cube, an orange twist, and a truly aromatic nose.
Resistance : reinforced/tempered glass for catering, crystal/crystalline for premium tableware.
Design : straight, faceted, vintage, minimal… (but always with good ergonomics).
Rocks vs Highball
The highball is designed for long cocktails (mixers, effervescence, a large proportion of ice), while the rocks is intended for shorter , stronger, more aromatic drinks. A highball is typically around 240–350 ml and is taller than an old fashioned.
