Cocktail glasses
The cocktail coupe (or “cocktail coupe”) is the glass for cocktails served “up”: shaken or stirred with ice, then strained and served without ice. It is among the most “premium bar” glasses because it ticks two boxes at once: aesthetics and function (clean service, aromas, temperature).
A bit of history that sells well
Originally, the coupe was long associated with champagne, before becoming a standard of the modern cocktail.
And no: the legend that it was "inspired by Marie Antoinette's breasts" is... a legend. Fun to talk about at a party, but false in reality.
Why the coupe glass really elevates a cocktail
It makes a cocktail look visually “premium”.
The glass showcases a beautiful surface: color, shine, fine foam, garnish… the cocktail practically presents itself. It's the perfect glass for recipes where a clean and elegant presentation is desired.
It reduces spillage (vs. the V-shaped Martini glass)
The cut is often chosen by pros as a safer alternative to the very open V: less spillage on the tray, more stable when serving.
She puts her nose in the right place
With an "up" cocktail, you want the aromas to arrive immediately (citrus, floral, spicy, bitter). The coupe does the job well: enough opening for the bouquet, without a "tunnel" effect or a feeling that's too closed off.
All the cocktails that perform well in a coupe glass
- Shaken and filtered classics: Daiquiri, Sidecar, Cosmopolitan
- Clean-looking (with a thin foam)
- Aromatic/floral cocktails where the nose is just as important as the mouth
The limit to know (and explain)
For highly sparkling cocktails (champagne, spritz, etc.), a coupe glass isn't ideal: its wide surface area causes the fizz to dissipate more quickly than a narrower glass. Therefore: a coupe glass is great for a "hot" cocktail, less ideal for a "bubbly" one.
Coupe vs Nick & Nora (super important in e-commerce)
The Nick & Nora glass is generally smaller, more tulip-shaped, designed to reduce spills and serve more precise volumes (often around 150–170 ml). The coupe is often a step above in capacity (often more generous).
Business translation: Nick & Nora = ultra chic / precise portions, cut = versatility / iconic look.
Pro tip: the sundae must be iced, period.
A lukewarm glass of wine ruins an "up" cocktail in 2 minutes.
Quick methods:
- Fill with ice + water while you prepare the cocktail (simple, effective).
- Express method: damp paper towel around the glass + 3 minutes in the freezer (very quick).
How to choose the right cocktail glass
- Thin rim: premium mouthfeel (ideal for individuals / high-end bars)
- Foot stability: essential for serving
- Consistent capacity: to avoid the "overflow" effect (and reduce losses in service)
- Durability/washability: if you're targeting the hospitality industry, prioritize models designed to withstand heavy use.
